How a call moved
Early telephone calls often required a human operator. Subscriber jacks, indicator lamps, cord circuits, ringing controls and supervisory signals let an operator answer a caller, patch a requested line and watch for clearing.
Larger networks used trunks between exchanges. Growing traffic helped drive automatic switching; manual switching remains an important ancestor of later automated telecommunications and digital networking.
Historical context
This recreation is inspired by the manual cord-switchboard era, especially the 1930s–1950s. It does not imply that every telephone system remained manual throughout that period: automatic exchanges already existed and expanded, with transitions varying by region, carrier and equipment.
Operators—often women in many manual-exchange systems—needed concentration, coordination, procedural knowledge and customer interaction skills.
