About this exhibit
This exhibit explores the evolution of computer communication over telephone networks, from acoustic-coupler-era connections at approximately 300 bit/s, through later dial-up modem communication, to modern connection-speed comparisons.
What you will try
- Dial a fictional remote computer using a telephone-style interface.
- Place a handset into an acoustic coupler and establish a carrier.
- Experience a deliberately slow 300-bit/s terminal session.
- Use a small historically inspired AT-command interface with a later dial-up modem.
- Hear browser-generated, historically inspired connection and negotiation sounds.
- Compare the theoretical transfer time of the same file across early and modern communication technologies.
Educational context
Early computers could exchange digital information across ordinary telephone networks by converting data into signals that could travel through systems designed primarily for voice. Acoustic couplers physically interfaced with a normal telephone handset using speakers and microphones, giving visitors a tangible way to understand the connection before studying detailed modem electronics.
The exhibit will explain the distinction between baud, symbols per second and bits per second rather than treating baud and bit/s as universally identical.
